Building on the success of our pioneering effort, the second edition of the Dark Sky Business Capability Course stands as the reliable resource for local businesses looking to tackle the potential of astro-tourism. Led by Hari Mogoșanu and Sam Leske, who not only run the highly successful Star Safari but have also more than 20 years experience in the field of space sciences and communication, this course cuts straight to the heart of what makes a stargazing venture successful. Both Hari and Sam bring their hands-on experience and extensive knowledge to the classroom, ensuring that participants receive no-nonsense, practical training that is directly applicable to growing their businesses.

Course Overview
This course is a strategic investment for businesses looking to enhance or create new offerings around the region’s stargazing potential. For a $75 fee, participants will engage in two classroom sessions at the Masterton District Council, a practical stargazing session at Star Safari, and a customized site visit:
1. Classroom Sessions at Masterton District Council
• Session One (April 3, 2025, 5:30 pm—8:30 pm): An introduction to the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve, an analysis of local business case studies, and strategies for leveraging astronomical events.
• Session Two (April 17, 2025, 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm): Equipment basics, online resources for beginners and the significance of the night sky in Māori culture.
2. Practical Stargazing at Star Safari
• Scheduled for May, this session covers the practical aspects of using telescopes and other stargazing equipment, including safety and site setup.
3. Site Assessment Visits in June
• Personalized evaluations at each participant’s business location, providing tailored advice on optimising sites for stargazing and astrophotography.

Hari Mogoșanu: A leading figure in New Zealand astrobiology and space sciences education, and a stargazer for over twenty years, Hari Mogoșanu has been widely recognised for her contributions to expanding public and academic engagement with space sciences. As the Executive Director of the New Zealand Astrobiology Network and founding Director of Milky-Way.Kiwi, Hari’s work spans organising international field expeditions, spearheading educational initiatives, and enhancing astro-tourism through Star Safari. Hari’s commitment to science communication is marked by her ability to translate complex scientific concepts into engaging learning experiences, impacting a broad audience ranging from school children to industry professionals.
Sam Leske: Sam Leske brings a rich and varied background from a long career in the Air Force and public service working with the aerospace sector and now putting that expertise and experience into his role as a premier space science educator. With a career transition from aviation and intelligence into the realm of educational outreach in astronomy and astrophysics, Sam has become instrumental in developing and delivering high-impact science communication initiatives. His expertise is crucial in guiding both the theoretical and practical aspects of astronomy and space sciences at Star Safari. Sam’s approach demystifies astronomical concepts, inspires a diverse audience and fosters a deeper appreciation for the science behind the stars. Sam has also been a stargazer of more than twenty years, building and running his own observatory in Wairarapa since 2009.
Together, Hari and Sam lead Star Safari and contribute significantly to space science education, offering experiences that bring the wonders of the universe for the public and schools.
